Devotion and Obedience to the Scriptures“But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.” “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.” (James 1:22, Matt 24:35)

Devotion and Obedience to the Scriptures“But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.” “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.” (James 1:22, Matt 24:35)

You are warmly welcome! Today is a day of sacred remembrance and joyful resolve, as thirty-two come for Confirmation after a season of intentional preparation. The event of Baptism or Confirmation or Ordination can possibly carry much fanfare, but the substance is not to pass away like the excitement; it is to continue getting stronger, just as wine does the longer it brews; at first, it's simply juice. But given time, and stillness, and surrender to the process—it matures. It becomes richer, more fragrant, more powerful. Confirmation Sunday is not merely an event to be marked with photos and applause, robes and oil—it is the lighting of a lamp to burn ever brighter, a holy moment to reaffirm a lifelong calling: to live as one devoted to God, obedient to His Word.

Do you turn to Christ? Will you read the Bible regularly and fashion your life after it? Will you endeavor to meet with other Christians for fellowship and stir up the gift of God that is in you? Today’s occasion gives those who were confirmed or baptized in the past an opportunity to remember, check and recommit. It is a call to continue, to persist, to enjoy devotion and obedience to the Scriptures. In James 1:21–25, we are told not to be hearers only, who forget what they see in the mirror of Scripture—but doers, who act. The Word is not a decoration on the altar of your life; it is the bread for your soul, the compass for your feet, the sword in your battle, the balm in your sorrow. As he urged Timothy, so Paul speaks solemnly to you today to “continue in what you have learned and firmly believed.” Don’t let your faith plateau after confirmation. Let this be the beginning of a stronger devotion, a deeper obedience, a more joyful walk.

The Scriptures remind us in Matthew 24:35, “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.” This is not a poetic exaggeration—it’s divine truth. Everything around us will change. The world shifts, culture bends, emotions rise and fall. But the Word of the Lord stands, eternal and unshaken. And so, to those being confirmed today, and to those who were confirmed years ago but have grown weary on the path, hear this call: Return to the Word. Stay with the Word. Walk in the Word.

Will you treasure God’s Word? Will you obey it when it’s hard, not just when it’s easy? Will you return to it when you’ve strayed? Will you build your life not on sand, but on Scripture? Then your confirmation is not just a ceremony—but a covenant. May the Word of Christ dwell in you richly, shaping you today, tomorrow, and forever. God bless you!
