Trinity: The God we believe in

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. (John 1:1-3)

You are warmly welcome! We thank God for those who are concluding a semester with exams, and pray for God’s protection and blessings upon our younger students who are resuming second term in schools.

Let us take time to meditate on the God we believe in; we often say: “We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth… We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God… We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son.” We have walked a good journey of celebrating Jesus Christ’s life and ministry, from his incarnation to his passion and ascension; and through this journey, he speaks about His Father and the coming Holy Spirit. This is our God: Three in One and One in Three – the Blessed Trinity. Though the mystery in the concept may not be completely removed, God has revealed himself in this way.

Apostle John introduces Jesus Christ as the incarnate Word who was with God in the beginning; indeed in the very first verse in the Bible, the Hebrew word for God is actually a plural form, and in the creation story God said, “Let us make man…” Throughout the Old Testament, people who needed to know what God was saying always looked for a man in who the Spirit of God was; the prophets in particular were known to have the Spirit of God enabling them to perform their office and proclaim the word of God.

This meditation on our God brings us at least three points of thanksgiving and response: first, He is a God of relationship. Just as the Father, Son and Holy Spirit relate and work in perfect harmony, we are encouraged that harmonious relationships are possible and vital for the sustenance of our world and work. Secondly, knowing that God is our Father assures us that He is not far, but lovingly close to us, and we can enjoy filial love in His presence; this is further expressed in the incarnation when the Son of God came down to become our brother! We believe in a loving God who calls us and embraces us in love as a family. And thirdly, we thank God because He reveals himself to us; through this process is progressive and we have not finished ‘the course’, the revelations keep us seeking more and receiving the satisfaction of the fellowship. “In him was life and that life was the light of all mankind” – this light will guide all who follow Him through this pilgrim land and to our eternal home where our knowledge of God will be made full, and our fellowship with him endless.

God bless you all!
