Fortified Comfort in God’s Glory
As he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became as bright as a flash of lightning. Two men, Moses and Elijah, appeared in glorious splendor, talking with Jesus. (Luke 9:29-30)
Where shall our comfort come from? The world is on edge as the Third World War seems to be threatening to errupt from Ukraine. As schools have resumed, a number of students lacking school fees are unsure if they will be able to proceed. Many threats attack us at various stages, whether at personal or national levels – including threats of death from terrible diseases or armed enemies. The three great men in the Transfiguration account were under serious threats at some points in their lives, and we are able to be comforted by looking at how they escaped to a victorious and glorious finish.
Moses was threatened in Egypt and in the wilderness, especially by his own people. His utmost comfort came from his fellowship with God, and at the epitome of it, God’s glory was dazzling brightly. “When Aaron and all the Israelites saw Moses, his face was radiant, and they were afraid to come near him” (Ex 34:30). Moses had spent a long time at Mount Sinai in intercession and asking for God’s glory to come down. He treasured this so much that it was a prerequisite for their continuation on the journey to the Promised Land. Much later, we are told that Elijah fled from Jezebel’s death threats and camped at the same Mount Horeb, and there experienced God’s comforting presence that re-energized him for the rest of his ministry life until he was taked to heaven in glorious chariots of fire.
Even Jesus Christ and his disciples were threatened seriously; the Transfiguration happened towards the end of Jesus’ ministry, and by this time a lot of resistance had been mounted by the Pharisees and Teachers of the Law, including mooting plots to kill him. Jesus has foretold his imminent death to his disciples, and they felt discouraged and confused about such news! Humanly speaking, Jesus needed comfort; and the disciples needed comfort too. Truly there is fortified comfort in God’s glory: Jesus received this comfort; the disciples received this comfort – as the voice came from the cloud, saying, “This is my Son, whom I have chosen; listen to him” (v.35).
What threatens you? Is it accidents, poor health, wars, revolts at work, or a bleak and uncertain future? Taking time deliberately in God’s presence attracts God’s glory that brings fortified comfort in the face of threats of whatever magnitude. Many places and guardians may disappoint, but this comfort and direction from God will strengthen you and carry you through the toughest of times, even to eternity in glorious bliss. Take time to seek Him, including special seasons like Lent, and be assured of this comfort.
God bless you all.
