Assurance for the Future
“Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips. Then you will be prosperous and successful. Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:8-9)
Assurance for the future is something everyone needs in order to make meaningful effort towards progress. We are a threatened generation: threatened by accidents, climate change, regional instability, abuse and misappropriation of public funds, and even witchcraft – to mention but a few. Only a week ago, the same day 21 people died in the Rubirizi fuel tanker fiery accident another 10 perished in the Namutumba bus accident; unexpected rains in July inspired many farmers to plant, but they are now left worried as the skies seem to be drying up in some parts of the country; the closed border hurts more now after the pact was signed because of the elusive hope; more details on the threats we face soon confirm that it is not only Hon. Anite who is threatened, but all of us in different ways.
Joshua’s threats were different from ours today, but equally worrying: His master for the last forty years had died without getting into the Promised Land – a land that Joshua himself had spied and seen the giants with his own eyes! Joshua had also witnessed the volatility and indiscipline of his own people the many times they tried to skin Moses in times of calamity or difficulty; now they were facing the greatest challenge of fighting their way into the land of the ‘seven nations larger and stronger’ than they. This is the occasion and reason why God addresses himself to Joshua with encouragement and assurance that we read in the opening chapter of the Book of Joshua.
The Word of God to Joshua is well applicable to us today. Between us and Joshua are the Apostles we read about in Acts 4 – threatened by the religious and political establishment of their day, but determined to proclaim the Name of Jesus against all odds, because of the assurance they had from their heavenly Master. Indeed the threats are real for the different generations that come and go. As for you today, be strong and courageous. The numerous insurance companies are aggressively selling their products, but there is much more that we need as believers.
Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips… Then you will be prosperous and successful. No matter the threat, God still invites us to hold onto His Word as the surest insurance policy against imminent dangers and obstacles. University students are on an adventurous journey that needs this assurance against the threats; the Word of God has answers and direction in the face of any situation; you will be warned, taught, rebuked, corrected and trained in righteousness to walk securely into your destiny.
God bless you.
