Timeless Treasures:
Is your money safe? In the best bank, national social security fund, with the government, or invested in a local or foreign business – with increasing hackers, embezzelers, economic instability and wars, you can’t be sure of the safety of your treasure here on earth.
Jesus simply put it: “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.” (Matt 6:19)
Eathly treasurer are transient: (1)moths and vermin represent all destroyers like pests, parasites, locusts, worms, huricanes… (2)thieves are of many kinds; they break-in, hack, steal during day, steal billions in corruption scandals. (3) value keeps changing: in just a few years, $10,000 can shrink into less than $500 by replacing more than ten gadgets (a camera, a video camera, a CD player, a stereo radio, a video game console, a cell phone, a watch, an alarm clock, a set of encyclopedias, a world atlas +++) with just a good smart phone! Earthly treasures are transient indeed!
For real timeless treasures, Jesus continues, “Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will never fail, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys.” (Luke 12:33) God created man with giving as a part of our DNA. We give by bequeathing, and the richest find the epitome of satisfaction in giving it away – philanthropy. 19th century steel mogul Andew Carnegie said, “I should consider it a disgrace to die a rich man”.
But it not just any giving, otherwise the Lord will expressly detest and reject as in Isaiah 1. It is a careful loving giving with a heart for justice and the poor and lowly that will guarantee you timeless treasures.
In conclusion, since “where your treasure is, there will your heart be also” (Luke 12:34), anyone whose heart is with earthly treasures will be sure of a heartbreak at some point in time; Mrs Job, the rich young man, Annanias and Sapphira were all really heartbroken. Your heart is only secure with timeless treasures; Mr Job, the poor widow who offered at the Temple, and Barnabas are among those whose hearts remained joyful and steadfast even after letting go of their earthly treasures. Giving generously in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ guarantees treasurers in heaven – these are the real ever-safe timeless treasurers. GBU
